AI NPCs in the Metaverse

What is NPC?

A non-player character (NPC) or a non-playable character is a character in a computer game that does not receive input from a human player. An NPC operates according to a set of instructions or rules that are programmed by the game developer. These instructions or rules specify the behavior, reaction, and interaction of the NPC with the game environment and other characters. Traditional NPCs tend to repeat the same actions and dialogues every time, and they may engage with the player character or other NPCs in various ways. NPCs can play different roles in games that enhance the player experience throughout the gameplay.

Generative AI

AI NPCs

To implement AI NPC using LLMs some input or context for the LLM to generate texts for the characters are needed. The input or context can be a prompt, a question, a keyword, a dialogue history, or any other information that guides the LLM to produce texts that are relevant and appropriate for the game scenario and character. It can also be customizable by fine-tuning it on specific data sets or adding some rules or constraints to control the output of the LLM. By using AI NPCs can create more engaging and personalized metaverse experiences, as well as explore new genres and narratives that leverage natural language interactions.
